I am in the process of starting to plan my vacation for this summer. Looks like I might be in Huntington Beach during the 1st two days of the US Open.
I was hoping to take some surf lessons but is this going to even be possible? Not sure how crowded the beach is...
Also provided I get there early is parking somewhat easy to find? I don%26#39;t mind arriving at say 8 or 9am.
Never been to Huntington Beach before so just trying to get a feel for how things will be during this event.
thanks!
US Open of Surfing questionIt%26#39;s pretty packed, but great fun. I would not expect lessons during this event would be very practical.
US Open of Surfing questionCheck out www.surfcityusa.com Have fun at the coast! :)
The US Open is one of my favorite events down at the beach and I see every one of them.
The first two days will be much, much slower than the rest of the week because not all of the events will be happening until the last 4 days of the event week....such as the BMX Bikes, Motocross etc. But the surf competition will be going on in the beginning as it is the qualifier surf competitions at first.
If you take surf lessons, they instructors will not do it near the event. No one is allowed to surf near the competition. From the event on South down the beach, (south of the pier)the lifeguards will hang the black ball flags around 10:00 am indicating that no one is allowed to surf on the beach anymore. This is for the safety of beach goers playing in the surf. You will only be allowed to surf North of the pier near Zack%26#39;s Beach Concession after the flags are hung. Keep that in mind so you might want to go to Zacks which is North of the pier to start with.
At 8 or 9 in the morning, the beach is not very crowded except near the competition and at tower 5 where the Junior Lifeguard program will start at 8:30. But if the weather is hot, the beach will start to fill up from about 9 on. Parking becomes the main issue, especially closer to the pier. Many of the event organizers and competitors take up the parking spots.
One word of advice, the hotels DO book up solid during this event so dont wait till last minute. Also, not sure if they are taking reservations yet, but the new Shorebreak Hotel is due to open this Spring..and it location is perfect. http://www.jdvhotels.com/hotels/shorebreak
I will post some photos of the event in my profile but it does take a couple days of delay before they are posted.
