Hi
Wwe are arriving from Oz on the 6th May 09. Travelling with us are our two boys (11 %26amp; 9) %26amp; my father. The following is our planned itinerary and was wondering what people think. I should let you know that try not to do one night stints so that we don%26#39;t have to continually pack and unpack.
6th - 12th may San Francisco - have rented a house on the beach fo $210/night via www.vrbo.com
12th - 14th May - San Sur - no accommodation yet
14th-17th May - Yosemite - have rented up cabin fo $115/night. It is 25mins out but a much cheaper option.
17th - 20th May - Kings Canyon. Though wondering should we knock this down to 2 nights and do a night at Death Valley?
21 - 22nd - Vegas baby!!!
22nd - we are about to book at overnight fly package - OUCH (the aussie dollar is killing us) but should be worth it.
We then Fly to washington afternoon of the 23rd. Any thought would be appreciated. Kathryn
17 days in california
Kings Canyon is very nice, I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;re boys will love the river. We always went in the summer and loved to fish, swim and tube on it. Do you plan on camping or staying at the lodge?
Come see us on the Las Vegas forum if you have questions about Sin City.
17 days in californiaI would take z day from Kings Canyon and perhaps add it to the ';San Sur'; portion, which I assume is San Francisco/Big Sur. You should have an extra day here for the Monterey Peninsula sights.
Where is the ';beach house'; you have rented in San Francisco? It it in the city itself or outside?
Hi
We have found two houses one at Sunset Beach and another near Lincoln Park Golf Course. Both houses are very close to public transport.
Very woosy Australians - no camping. We are planning on staying just out of the park in rental home/cabin.
I think you would enjoy being near Lincoln Park. The Palace of the Legion of Honor is there, which has some outstanding exhibits, as well as a replica of Roden%26#39;s ';The Thinker'; at the entrance. Also, near there are great trails where you can view the Golden Gate Bridge from the ocean side.
The ';beach'; in San Francisco is not really prominent, except, perhaps, for the beach out by the Great Highway....pretty far from the center. The city is definitely not a ';beach town';. Too cold, except for bundling up and walking it in hopes of finding some driftwood or something.
I like the suggestion for the Monterey area, you should not miss spending some time at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, your kids will love it! This is a very scenic area of the CA coast. Have fun! :)
The area around Lincoln Park is nicer than the beach area section of the Sunset neighborhood. It%26#39;s also closer to downtown; although it will still be 30+ minute bus ride to Union Square and downtown. As previous poster indicated, San Francisco%26#39;s beach area isn%26#39;t crowded like other parts of California%26#39;s coast.
The nearby neighborhood is an eclectic mixture of Russian and Asian. Also, the Cliff House isn%26#39;t far and it%26#39;s a nice walk along Ocean Beach to Golden Gate Park. The Beach Chalet on the west end of Golden Gate Park you can eat outdoors (on the protected side) and there%26#39;s an intersting park exhibit there as well.
Just to clarify ... ';The Thinker'; at the Palace of the Legion of Honor is from the original cast. There are many ';Thinkers'; around the world and some are made from different casts and others are different in size. This museum has many other Rodin sculptures but ';The Thinker'; sits in the courtyard.
You should make time for Death Valley,it is a stunning place.
