You certainly can do LA to San Francisco in one day, really depends on which way you want to do it %26amp; if you are really in a hurry,if you are in a hurry you can use the interstate BUT if you have time use the coast highway, stop a couple of nights on the way,see Hearst Castle %26amp; enjoy the views en route,it%26#39;s well worth it if you have the time.

This Avis should be closest: 1548 N Cahuenga Blvd, Los Angeles, CA

It might be more convinient to get a rentel car at the airport when you arrive in Los Angeles. That way you would not have to deal with shuttle/taxi/van to get to your hotel first

FYI, your hotel, is not near Universal Studios (in spite of its name). It%26#39;s in an outlying area of Hollywood (not within walking distance of anything except a number of hospitals and the adjacent community of Los Feliz which has some nice restaurants)

BTW, you can access Universal from your hotel by walking to the nearby entrance of the red line metro rail station and taking the train northbound 4 stops to the Universal City station. Exit the station, cross the street and wait for the free tram ';up the hill'; to the park. Between the connection time between the two conveyances and the walking, you%26#39;re looking at a transfer time of about 35 or 40 minutes.

Many thanks to you all for replying - have taken info on board only in LA for 2 days for universal studios %26amp; city tour then travelling up to san fran. Nobody mentioned how many Miles or Kilometres it is and how many hours approximately it will be. Checkin out of hotel on a sat morn should be checkin in at a hotel in San Fran that evening is it possible? THanks again

xeronicgg, check maps.google.com for driving and time direction. There are a lot of sightseeing on the way to SF, so perhaps you want to check them, instead of just driving

fabulous - first time using google maps - perfect!

You can make it from LA to SF in a day, if you want to, or need to. It would be too bad, however, to miss the beautiful drive up the coast through Big Sur. This would require an overnight or two on your way. Two, if you want to experience the Monterey area.

A couple points here:

1. The Ramada Hollywood is not that nice of a hotel. I stayed there over the summer while in L.A. for business and was disappointed in it, even though I knew it would be an average hotel. Do you have access to Priceline or Hotwire in Turkey? If so, I recommend book a 3.5-star or higher hotel in the Hollywood area from either site. You will find that the rates are comparable to (or slightly lower than) the cost of the Ramada Hollywood.

2. Please, please, please spend more time on your drive from L.A. to S.F. The coastal drive is absolutely stunning, and rushing this part of your trip would be a shame. State Route (SR) 1 (a.k.a. Pacific Coast Highway) is regularly regarded as one of the most scenic roadways in the United States and all of North America! You should take in SR 1 from San Luis Obispo to Monterey at a minimum, but also consider the stretches from Santa Monica to Ventura (instead of US 101) and from Monterey to San Francisco (instead of I-280). You can stick with US 101 between Gaviota and Pismo Beach, as SR 1 here is not much different.
