Hi, we (husband and 3 teen daughters) are travelling to San Francisco mid April for 2 nights. Our price range is $200ish. A few places I have researched on Tripadvisor and other sites are as follows: Queen Anne Hotel
Handelry Union Square
Cow Hollow Motor Inn
Hotel Del Sol
Coventry Motor Inn
Columbus Motor Inn
Orchard Garden Hotel
I would greatly appreciate any comments/opinions any one may have on these hotels/motels.
Thank you! jennie

Hmmm, these spots are all over the map -- literally and figuratively. Many in the Marina but you also have Union Sq area, Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf and lower Pacific Heights. Very different types and classes of places too.
Where do you want to locate? What types of things do you want to see and do? Will you have a car and need parking?
Are you planning on getting two rooms or are you looking into a suite?

terrific questions! We%26#39;re really not sure to be honest. We haven%26#39;t decided on sights and interests yet. We will have a car. Sometimes we stay in 1 room depending on size and sometimes a suite.
I didn%26#39;t really care too much about location because we may be all over anyway--but if you recommend a specific area that would appreciated!! thanks, jennie
Parking can be very expensive downtown so you might want to limit choices to those with free parking (Marina and the Columbus Motor Inn).
Many places don%26#39;t allow more than 3 people per room so you might want to check with the hotels directly. I believe the Columbus Motor Inn and Del Sol have suites. There is also the Cow Hollow Suites associate wih the Cow Hollow Inn.
The Columbus Motor Inn is close to Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf but far enough away not to be in the middle of all the schlocky stuff (you%26#39;ll find most locals aren%26#39;t enamoured with FW).
The other Marina locations are on, or just off, Lombard St. Transportation to FW, North Beach, Union Square, Golden Gate Park is good. Walking distance to Exploratorium, Crissy Field, GG Bridge and Presidio.
Perhaps it%26#39;s time to list out all the things you%26#39;ll want to see and do and then decide on the best location.
My first choices would be the Columbus Motor Inn or the Handlery.
We stayed at the Columbus Motor Inn last fall, when our preferred location of Union Square (we have theater tickets) was taken up by conventions. They have free parking, are a short walk to Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf and I understand they have a family suite. There are two or three very good breakfast cafes within two or three blocks. The price is reasonable for San Francisco.
The Handlery is in an excellent location, half a block off Union Square, with access to the cable cars, Muni buses, the trolleys on Market Street and BART, if you had occasion to go somewhere it covers. I believe it has rooms which would fit 5, in their ';club'; rooms which are separated from the historic building by an outdoor pool, a real rarity in the city. You would be paying for parking there, although if you dropped off the bags and most of the family, there is a public parking garage two blocks away at Mason and O%26#39;Farrell which is fairly reasonable.
If you decide to stay in the Marina, Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf is quite a walk, depending upon your location, and you would want to take public transportation to get downtown because of the cost and difficulty of parking. Look into the Cow Hollow Motor Inn and Suites there.
I believe you would need two rooms at the Orchard Garden. There are limits on the number of persons allowed in a room. You would also be paying for parking there.
Here is another for your consideration. This is on Powell Street, a couple of blocks up the hill from Union Square....google Grosvenor Suites. Their apartments also have a kitchen, so you could breakfast in, if you wished.
The teen daughters would love the Union Square location, near Macy%26#39;s, Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, etc.
Good luck on your decision, and have a great trip.

How about a little consideration for Dad%26#39;s bank account?
The car issue is huge. Parking can cost up to $50 a day, so it is a consideration.
If you have a car, choose Hotel Del Sol or the Columbus Motor Inn or Cow Hollow Motor Inn.
If you don%26#39;t -- and we routinely recommend that people do not get a car until they have a day or a portion of their trip outside of San Francisco (Napa, Monterey, Southern California) -- a downtown such as the Handlery Hotel which is good for families would be best.
Since it%26#39;s only two nights, a car would be superfluous.
We will have a car because ultimately we have to make our way to San Diego as we are flying out of there April 17. We arrive in San Francisco the 11th. We are absolutley fine parking a car and using public transportation so the location isn%26#39;t as important (I think). Thanks to all!! jennie
Like many travellers who fly into SFO and stay in SF a couple nights before driving the coast, my husband and I didn%26#39;t pick up our car until the a.m. we were departing for Santa Cruz. Definitely was the best deal for us in terms of cost and ease. We used Alamo on Bush St.
Do you normally taxi to your hotel and then rent the car? jennie
There are various options to get to San Francisco such as taxi, airport shuttle, or BART depending on how much luggage you have and where you are staying. Then use public transportation - easy to do. Rent a car when you decide to travel outside of San Francisco.
Another option for a family of 5 is San Francisco VBRO rentals:
