Weather Road Closures

FYI for those going to Death Valley in the next week or two:

Check with the Park Service for weather and road conditions, because several park roads are currently closed or have resrictions:

Dante%26#39;s View, Hunter Mountain, and Titus Canyon currently closed due to snow or ice.

Emigrant Canyon 4WD or chains required, Wildrose Road to Kilns 4WD with chains required, and Mahogany Flat may be inaccessible.

The high and low temperatures at Furnace Creek on Saturday were 59潞 and 34潞F (15潞 and 1潞C). It%26#39;s expected to stay cool for the next couple days, with snow above 4500%26#39;/1370m.

Conditions could change abruptly, so you can call the Park Service at 760-786-3200 for current info.

Weather Road Closures

Thanks for the update. I was hoping to take in Dante%26#39;s View this trip ... oh, well! We will be at FCR from the 27th for three nights. We%26#39;ll be sure to bring proper layering clothes.

Do you know if Bell Vista/Stateline is open? We have a night by McCarran and weren%26#39;t sure if the route through Pahrump would be better this time.

Weather Road Closures

AFAIK, the Pahrump route to Death Valley is always open. It%26#39;s low enough that serious snow is rare. but it can get icy.

OTOH, I once drove in the Shoshone-Johnnie area in winter and encountered a sudden snow that actually stuck, and worried me a little because I was in a regular car with front-wheel drive. But keep in mind that where I live, that much snow doesn;t exist, so it shouldn%26#39;t bother you.

P.S. Check on Dante%26#39;s View once you get to the park. Depending on weather, the road might be clear at some point during your visit.

I haven%26#39;t decided whether I%26#39;m going to DV or not. I still hope to get to Utah, but the Sierra weather has been so unstable that I%26#39;m a little leery. In fact, I%26#39;ve been stalling off my departure since Friday to monitor the weather, and I can%26#39;t wait much longer.

If I make it to DV, I%26#39;ll try to look you up at the Ranch or leave you a message. If you see a silver FJ Cruiser with a personalized CA plate with a word that looks familiar to you, I will be somewhere in the vicinity (or on a trail in the vicinity).

Weather here looks as if its going to be pretty shaky ... even down toward Zion.

Well, Xochi, I made it to SL, but I may not make it out, lol. We%26#39;ve been waiting patiently (ha ha) for this monster that was predicted a couple days ago, and the TV weather people said it was taking so long just because it was so large. Interesting that it%26#39;s apparently a Northwest storm but it hit the south SL Valley earlier today.

I think I got out of Lovelock just in time yesterday. I%26#39;d hoped to get farther along but got a very late start Tuesday from S.F. I had intermittent snow and flurries across much of Nevada, but as soon as I hit Wendover it turned partly cloudy with blue patches and even some sunshine--the calm before the storm.

My Christmas day plans didn%26#39;t work out with the people I was going to visit; they had a problem. So I went out sightseeing about midday. I went up Emigration Canyon to East Canyon lake (I somehow missed getting there in the past).

I thought of going to Evanston to piddle around and look at historic buildings. But I got to Parley%26#39;s Summit and the snow was thickening and the wind picking up. I%26#39;m not faint of heart and I have a mule on wheels, but I%26#39;m not crazy either and I don%26#39;t look for trouble without good reason, and going to Evanston was not good reason. So I turned around at Summit Park. The wind on the way down was scary; I was going about 45 mph and hanging on for dear life.

I spent a couple of hours at Temple Square and the weather was actually warmish, probably mid-30s. I got back to the hotel dry, but now it%26#39;s cascading down, very pretty but it%26#39;ll be a pain in the morning. I was just out in the lobby watching the street and not envying the people driving by. Thankfully tomorrow will be a light commute day.

I don%26#39;t know if I%26#39;ll be in DV while you%26#39;re there. I want to see friends in Nephi on the way, and since I don%26#39;t travel on Sunday it%26#39;ll be at least late Monday when I get to DV, and that%26#39;s if I go straight there. Not a problem, we seem to move in some of the same geographical circles, so one of these days our paths will probably cross.

Figures! At least you%26#39;re safe. Tomorrow we get on the road and overnight in Vegas. Are scheduled to be in DV Saturday through Monday night ... so there%26#39;s still a chance on that end. I was planning on leaving DV sometime around noon on Tuesday for the drive to Mesquite.

Funny that we%26#39;ll probably be passing each other on the highway.

Drive safely!

Hi, Xochi--

On the outside chance you might get to go online at FCR, I sent you a p.m. I am on track to be there tomorrow, and when I find out where I can settle down, I%26#39;ll leave a message at the desk with the name you gave in your p.m. -- D****, right?

For anyone else who might be following this topic ... it was really nice visiting with someone who was travelling the same circles ... who takes the time to share their experiences with others.

If only to say %26#39;hello%26#39; to a fellow trip advisor in passing.
