Inn at Sonoma

My husband and I are planning a trip to Sonoma this summer. We are looking for a nice hotel or B%26amp;B in Sonoma. I am leaning towards the Sonoma Inn but totally open to suggestions.

Inn at Sonoma

Its a nice place to stay...

One thing....are you looking to go to Sonoma - the city...or are you looking to go to Sonoma - the county. If the county, you might also want to consider places to stay around the Healdsburg area such as:

Honor Mansion

as it also has a swimming pool for the often hot days of summer.

Inn at Sonoma

The Inn at Sonoma is lovely, and only 1/2 block away from the historic Plaza around which the town was built during the Mexican era of California.

It is a Four Sisters property.

There are still original adobes around the Plaza, including the adobe barracks of the Mexican soldiers under General Mariano Vallejo, some of them Indians which he had trained. He soon got out of the soldier business after California became US territory but continued to be a resident.

The last California Mission founded by the Franciscans is on a corner of the plaza. Its date was 1823.

The Sonoma Cheese Factory is also on the Plaza. They have free samples out and a good deli, as well as selling local wine. Try the Sonoma Pepper Jack cheese.

There is an excellent restaurant, which used to be called ';The General%26#39;s Daughter'; because it was/is housed in the Victorian house built for Vallejo%26#39;s youngest daughter, Natalia, when she married the son of the man who brought the first European wine grape cuttings to California, thus starting the whole thing. He was Agostin Haraszthy, a Hungarian by birth.

The restaurant is now called ';Estate'; and here you can get a review from the San Francisco Chronicle.

I am a native Sonoman and when I go back to visit I like to stay on or near the Plaza, so I can browse the boutiques and mourn the loss of the department store, the shoe repair shop, the skating rink, the dime store, the hardware store....

Here are two more hotels, one on the Plaza and one a few blocks away, and two more restaurants, on the Plaza.

Have a wonderful trip. If you stay near the Plaza you can actually walk to the Sebastiani Winery, up Spain Street a few blocks.
