Late January drive from SF to South Lake Tahoe?

Happy New Year!! Headed to the San Francisco area for 6 days at the end of the month. We%26#39;re thinking of taking a day to drive to Lake Tahoe and spend the day skiing, sledding, etc. I realize it will be a long drive but what about the road conditions? Dangerous? Risk of closures? Thanks in advance for your input!

It%26#39;s difficult to say this far ahead. If a storm is going through there can be closures and/or chain controls. Definitely carry chains. If you%26#39;re rentig a car, some rental car companies will rent the chains so check that out in advance.

If you%26#39;re only going for a day think about going to Sugar Bowl which is on Highway 80 just at Donner Summit and will save you 30-60 minutes over going all the way to the Lake.

Are you talking about driving up and back in one day or spending the night?

IMHO it would be utterly pointless to do the 7 hour roundtrip in a day, unless you really like driving.

If it starts to snow, your drive will take much longer.

You will have to watch the weather reports leading up to the day you want to go to know what the roads will be like then.

It has to snow pretty hard to actually close I-80 (north) or Hwy. 50 (South Lake Tahoe). You must carry tire chains when crossing the Sierras in winter. They do put up chain controls where they stop you and require that you install them before proceeding.

As far as dangerous, it all depepnds on how good you are, and those around you are, at driving in the snow.

Ramblin Sal gives good advice. If you just want to play in the snow go up I-80 to Sugar Bowl, it will knock an hour off of your roundtrip.

Thank you both for your input. We%26#39;ll look into Sugar Bowl as an alternative.
