We are thinking of visiting the Redwood Park. Maybe flying into Oakland and driving the coast. Would April or October be better? We visited the Columbia Gorge, in April, and found out later, October might have been a little dryer. We went to Olympic National Park this past October, it was so beautiful.
Would love any and all suggestions.
Redwood ParkThe NoCal coast does not get as much rain as western Oregon. That%26#39;s where TripAdvisor forums are so very useful - if you had enquired about Oregon, we would have warned you about our [endless] rain ;-)
Eureka area, April will still be a bit damp, but oh-so-green, with flowers everywhere. October, early, tends to be drier.
Redwood ParkI%26#39;d vote for April. More chance of rain, but there will be running water. By October all the coastal streams are pretty much dry. Also in April less chance of coastal fog. And plenty of wildflowers. Both seasons are quiet, so you won%26#39;t have to deal with crowds in the parks and campsites and lodgings.
Oakland is a decent choice. We flew up, rented an RV in Oakland, then drove up the coast: I recommend:
Point Reyes (early am before fog sets in), horseback on Sonoma Coast, Redwood NP and State Park (the best), then up to Oregon Caves NP (our favorite caves), rafting on the Rogue. If you are ambitious, Crater Lake OR is a side trip from there worth the drive. It still had snow in July...
I like October better b/c it will be dryer and I love fall, but the points about flowing water are good.
The RV was a novel experience and a blast. We ended up buying one a year later and did a 9 week cross country trip inspired by this jaunt.
Hope you enjoy your trip.
Crater Lake will be closed for anything except snow activites in April -- they get about 40 feet of snow every winter!
Rentthisplace, as a long-time RV%26#39;er, I%26#39;m glad you enjoyed your rental so much you bought one :-) Would be great if you did reviews of the RV parks and campgrounds you have stayed in. I encourage all RV%26#39;ers to write reviews!
Note: Sometimes TA kicks the RV parks back, saying they don%26#39;t qualify for a review. So, I patiently tell them, yes, they do accept them! They are reviewed under the general category of ';hotels';.
Hi vacationdiva
Those are two of the best months up here. More likely to rain in April than October. If you base your decision on rain alone October is your best bet for dry weather. In my 36 years up here early October has alway produced the best weather. Even then you will want a lightweight gore tex jacket and waterproof shoes. Northen California is huge it will take you 5+ hours to get from Oakland to Eureka with no stops except for gas. What activities do you enjoy? How many days for the trip? Do you want to go somewhere besides the redwoods? If I know these things I can help.
Have Fun

We have a week for our vacation. We like hiking %26amp; siteseeing. I think Eugene, OR, would be closer to fly into. We love the advice from everyone. We have had the most wonderful vacations, from the advice of other trip posts. We have visited most NP in the west %26amp; southwest.
Hi vacationdiva
It is also 4 or 5 hours to Eugene to Eureka. You can fly into ACV (Eureka-Arcata) located in McKinleyville it is served by Horizon via LAX or PDX, Delta via Salt Lake, and United via SFO.
Medford is another alternative. You might look at Trinidad as a base for the northern redwoods parks
and Garberville (Best Western or Benbow Inn) for the southern parks. here are some links to get you going.

You are right Eureke,is closer. I was just looking for the best price, but I have to consider, lost vacation time traveling between, the cheaper airport and my destination. Thanks.
Do people spot whales along the coast? We visited Maui, in Mar, and the whales were everywhere, constantly breaching. We saw a couple of ';blows'; off the Oregon coast, but no actual whales,at the end of Apr.
We are now thinking of visiting April 25-May 2.
LOve everyone%26#39;s advice, Thanks
Here%26#39;s a dandy website for you:

Thanks, Will 1 week be enough?
We were thinking of Florida to escape the midwest winter...but this looks so much better. We went to Olympic NP, this past Oct...it was SO WONDERFUL!
