Getting to beaches from downtown without a car

Hi, my wife and I are planning on staying downtown and would really like to spend some time at the local beaches. Is this possible without a car?

It sure is! Which beaches do you want to visit? From downtown:

Coronado - Route 901 (to Hotel del Coronado)

Ocean Beach - Route 923

Mission Beach - Blue Line Trolley to Old Town, transfer to Routes 8/9 (Route 8 there, Route 9 back)

Pacific Beach - Route 30

La Jolla - Route 30

Welcome to the forum Boulder5. We have family in your city. Just a little geography to add to the great public transportation info you have been given.

Coronado is a wide white sandy beach that is across SanDiego Bay from downtown as it is on the end of a peninsula that juts out into the bay. It is a quiet beach with the historic Hotel Del California there as well. It%26#39;s a nice place for a drink on their terrace. In addition to the bus just mentioned there is a passenger ferry that crosses the bay but then you%26#39;d have to walk about 1/2mile to the beach.

Pacific Beach and Mission Beach are really one long beach with Mission being the southern end and Pacific the northern end. This is a busier place and you can rent surfboards here and walk/bike/skate along the cement strip we call a boardwalk.

Ocean Beach is more of a locals place as there is only 1 hotel and 1 hostel. It has a surfer/hippy feel to it.

It has the longest pier where you can walk out and watch surfers. Pacific Beach on its northern end also has a pier.

La Jolla COVE has a series of small rock enclosed(cove) beaches with a grassy park above. One of the coves is set aside for scuba, snorkel in its underwater park. There are high end boutiques, art galleries and restaurants here.

La Jolla SHORES is another wide white sandy beach where you can rent surfboards, take a surf lesson, rent a sea kayak and/or go on a sea kayak tour. There is also a grassy park next to the beach.

You have lots of choices!!!!!!
