crowds in Yosemite - early June

I%26#39;ve read that the crowds are worse in the park on holiday weekends.

We%26#39;re due to be in the park around the 1st June. Do the crowds that come with memorial day ease off straight after memorial day or do people take the ful week off?

Thanks

Be interested in seeing the responses to this one since my dh and I will arrive on May 29th for 9 nights...celebrating 25th Anniversary there thanks to help from TA members!!!

You are certainly going to encounter people around June 1st, but the crowds are not going to be at summer peak yet. If you%26#39;re willing to step just a bit off the beaten path, you%26#39;ll be able to get away from people. Lower Yosemite Falls will be mobbed, as will Vernal Fall footbridge in all likelihood. But take a walk in the early morning or around dinner time, or take a walk from the visitor center to Mirror Lake past the Ahwahnee, and you%26#39;ll find spots on your own.

As far as more detailed info about crowds, having worked in the park the last few years, I%26#39;d say that there are level of crowds in spring and summer. Waterfall season causes a good pickup in May, particularly on weekends, but it%26#39;s nothing compared to the ultimate horror month of August (for other readers...please...please don%26#39;t visit then...unless you%26#39;re going to spend ALL your time in Tuolumne Meadows).

Memorial Day weekend is of course nuts, particularly in the Valley and Glacier Point (assuming it%26#39;s open), but Memorial Day itself usually isn%26#39;t as bad since most people are driving out that day.

The summer madness really hits Father%26#39;s Day weekend, perhaps because that coincides with US schools getting out for the summer/graduation/etc..

And then...August. Did I mention August? :)

You%26#39;ll see some spectacular waterfalls when you visit. Expect people in concentrated areas, and plan to take some easy or more difficult hikes to get yourself away from the crowds a bit. You%26#39;ll have a great time! Happy planning.

Holidays have historically been very busy times, weekends or not. If you are here before the schools let out, you will notice that difference, once we are in summer season there is only a little difference between week days and weekends, both are busy.

The areas that are less busy and still beautiful include Tuolumne Meadows, Hetch Hetchy and the Mariposa Grove in the south. Also, if you like to hike, the further you get away from your car, the fewer people you will see, dramitically!

Have a great trip.

Just avoid Yosemite Valley on Memorial Day weekend unless you love crowds and want crowds of people in the photos you take. The crowds should ease a bit on Tuesday the 26th.

Enjoy your visit!

Memorial Day weekend will be totally crazy in Yosemite Valley, but the week after it shouldn%26#39;t be too bad. We%26#39;ve been there in mid-June and it was crowded, but not overly so. Do you plan to camp? If so, you need to make your reservation on Jan. 15 for arrivals between May 15 and June 15.

Once in Yosemite, there are plenty of ways to get away from the crowds and how far away you can get depends on your hiking ability. You can do the usual hikes like going out to Vernal and Nevada falls or even all the way to Half-Dome. A short easy hike is going out to Taft Point on the way to Glacier Point. When we did we only encountered a few people. The hike through Mariposa Grove is also nice and uncrowded.
