Half Moon Bay

How difficult is it to get from Half Moon Bay into San Francisco?

Half Moon Bay

It depends on what type of transportation you use.

If with a car, its relatively easy drive (about 45 minutes to an hour). So far, Highway 1 north of Half Moon Bay is open (they are working hard in this area to address this issue as sometimes it is closed during the rainy season.) This is called the Devils Slide Area.

If you want to be up to date on road conditions,

and put in the highway you are interested in finding out more information on; in this case, highway 1.

If you are looking for public transportation into San Francisco, it is a bit more complex and not that easy.

Take Cal Train to San Mateo....

From San Mateo Cal-train Station take

Multi-City Service Route 294

Takes about 40 minutes to cross the coastal mountains (which is ok as similar to a car time).

Once there Coastside Route 17 to get around

Half Moon Bay

I am almost sorry that the tunnel will bypass Devil%26#39;s Slide, because the views are so stupendous from that stretch of road. (If you aren%26#39;t familiar with it, we all recommend you don%26#39;t gawk for more than a couple seconds at a time, or pull over at one of the few spaces along the roadside, otherwise you%26#39;ll end up over the cliff in the ocean).

I do recognize the need for a bypass, because the winter storms, flooding, rockslides, combined with the proximity to the San Andreas Fault, make that stretch of road unreliable. Some past closures have lasted for months while repairs were made. And when the tunnel is finished, the old road will become a trail for foot and bicycle use. :)

Half Moon Bay is a wonderful place. It%26#39;s worth a trip if you are spending a few days in San Francisco and want some offbeat sightseeing, ocean access, and fun local shops and restaurants. It%26#39;s a nice stop on the way down the coast. You can get to Santa Cruz or the Monterey area without stopping overnight, but HMB is a good place for a break.

OTOH, if you are looking for lodgings while visiting San Francisco, it is too far away and the access is too complicated to make it practical.

Frisco Runner: I agree with you too about the views....it will be sad, but more predictabe drive.

Greetings %26amp; Happy 2009!

What I could suggest if you%26#39;re taking public transportation is to take BART to Daly City Station

then hop on the SamTrams Bus to Half Moon Bay.

I%26#39;ve had the hair raising experience of doing that once when I was without a vehicle.Lookup the Samtrams schedules to find out times.Sunday schedules are like Holiday schedules with the Buses

so keep that in mind.

Half Moon Bay is a neat place.Stroll around

Main Street to all the quaint shops, then stop into the San Benito House for lunch.Miramar Lodge is a couple miles away yet on a small corniche overlooking the ocean.A couple miles up is the Princeton Harbor where you can get fresh seafood

listen to the lighthouse signal. When eating outside lookout for the ';sea gulls'; as they will swipe your food out of your hand.
