What%26#39;s your lifestyle preferences? i.e. do you want someplace quiet or do you like a party?
A couple popular party places are green tortoise in north Beach and Elements in the Mission. Green tortoise is older and attracts a hippy burner crowd. Elements has a club on the premises with the music thumping till 2am.
Green tortoise has lots of free food and a chill room with pool table and stuff. Elements doesn%26#39;t have any common area, but the facilities are new and cleaner.
For someplace where you%26#39;ll actually ba able to sleep, Hosteling international has a couple very popular locations. The City Center location on Ellis is in a more sketchy, but not dangerous part of downtown, but TA reviewers rave about it%26#39;s cleanliness and service. I%26#39;ve looked around in there and it looks nice.
The HI Fisherman%26#39;s wharf location is a little isolated but beautiful location with views of the golden gate bridge and the bay.

Were to stay in a hostel here, %26#39;twould be the one on Mason Street, 1.6 blocks from Union Square.
The ';Don%26#39;t-miss sights in San Francisco'; page geocities.com/iconoc/Articles/Sights.html has enough to keep you busy for nine twelve-hour days. It includes links to your best source of advice on where to eat here, the UseNet Group ba.food, and the quite-good sfSurvey. It also has a weather chart with a link to current conditions.
The best on-line map of San Francisco is an inter-active PDF: geocities.com/iconoc/Grafix/MuniMap.pdf. I recommend 150-300% magnification. A creation of the San Francisco Municipal Railway, it includes all of its routes.
The frequently-updated SPECIAL EVENTS page has irregularly-scheduled music and dances as well as links to seven calendars of regularly-scheduled dances, a composite of five of them, and one of dance cruises and events around the world: geocities.com/dancefest/Specials.html#t
Your question about safety is unanswerable because an Earthquake could happen at any instant. Fires happen. Cyclones, floods, tornadoes, tsunami, hurricanes. Bad guys might be at the corner. If they%26#39;re not involved with someone else, they might want to get involved with you. You could be mistakenly arrested and charged with a serious crime. Traffic lights get out of order. People ignore STOP signs and lights. Safety isn%26#39;t anywhere. Danger is everywhere. What scares you might differ from what scares me. Statistics indicate that your bathroom is the most dangerous place you can be. Better watch out!
The Green Tortoise is the best hostel in San Francisco, for sure. I stayed there for a week, after a few days here and there at other hostels, and I found it to be the friendliest, with the most amenities.
It%26#39;s located on a block that has quite a few strip joints on it but it is actually quite safe in spite of this. The security is really good too, they make sure that the only people coming in are registered guests, or pre-approved visitors. The front door locks at night too, and but there is no curfew (a nice plus!) so you can come and go as you please and always feel safe because they watch everyone that comes in the door.
It has a great social scene, really cozy beds with big comforters and plenty of space in the lockers. There%26#39;s also free breakfast in the morning, and dinner 3 nights out of the week, so that helps with a traveler%26#39;s budget. If you want to spend money on a nice dinner there%26#39;s loads of really nice restaurants right down the street too. That%26#39;s the other thing-the location is ideal, its right in the middle of everything, close to Fisherman%26#39;s Warf and downtown and they have lots of information about the area at the front desk. Trust me, you won%26#39;t regret staying here!
