sightseeing in winter?

I鈥檒l be visiting San Francisco on business in late January/early February. I鈥檓 considering whether to extend my stay for a day or two for some sightseeing. I visited a few years ago in the late summer, when I鈥檇 imagine it was much warmer and drier than it will be in a few weeks. Last time I was there, I hit some of the really big tourist attractions: Fisherman鈥檚 Wharf, Alcatraz, the SF Giants stadium, the Golden Gate Bridge, Lombard St., and took trips to Muir Woods and Carmel.

I was thinking of taking a touring company trip (I prefer not to drive / rent a car in big cities) North to one of the wine towns, and perhaps spending some time in Golden Gate Park. Will either of these be diminished by the weather at this time of year? In either case, does anyone have any other recommendations to fill out a couple of days with things to do for this time of year?

Thanks.

Wine tour will work nice for any type of weather. Check sightseeing along 49-Mile Scenic Drive for attraction you missed first time.

A bus tour to the Wine Country will fill your entire day - weather is never an issue in Napa or Sonoma - the plus side is the wineries with fireplaces have a nice fire lit waiting for you to enjoy!

It%26#39;ll be uncomfortable if a major storm passes through, as it will most likely be windy, cold and wet.

However, you might also hit a warm spell, which is not unheard of along the California coast.

Some of my most memorable visits to SF were when it was raining. Fortunately, it was intermittent rain and I loved watching the rain clouds float over the Golden Gate and across the bay.

Wine tasting is wonderful any time of year; so definitely extend it. There are many tours that go from San Francisco. Its a bit quieter at some of the wineries; this makes it all the better as you have more room in the tasting rooms and those pouring the wine are generally in a mellow mood and very happy to answer your questions. For Golden Gate Park, if its not rainy, there is enough to fill a full day. If its rainy, there are museums to go to such as

and the Steinhart that just opened and worth going to.

Enjoy your trip.
