snow shoe badger pass or Tenaya

Hi We are plannning a trip for a few days in late January with 2 teenage children. We are staying at the Tenaya, and thought we might like to try some snow shoeing or cross country skiing. I believe it is available at the Tenaya and maybe also at Badger Pass. Is one location more scenic or preferable? We have never tried either and are not familiar with the 2 locations. THanks for any input.

I haven%26#39;t been showshoeing around Tenaya Lodge, but have been at Badger Pass. Badger is nice on clear days, as you%26#39;ll be able to see some of the high peaks of Yosemite. You%26#39;ll also be going through some forest as well. It is quite scenic, and can be nice if some of you group wants to downhill ski, snowboard, cross country ski, or go tubing, since they are all available there, and it%26#39;s a relatively small area so you won%26#39;t spend a lot of time trying to find each other.

One other suggestion, the Park concessionaire is offering guided snowshoe walks in other areas...one of which is Dewey Point. Now it is a bit pricey, and you should know that I would call it a moderately strenuous to strenuous adventure. But I think if you%26#39;re willing to give it a try, it could be absolutely incredible. Dewey Point puts you pretty much direct across from El Capitan, kind of looking down on it (and the rest of the Valley). In the winter it would be spectacular.

Also, if you can rent snowshoes at Tenaya Lodge, you could go on your own to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias (probably a 15 minute drive from your hotel). Depending on how the winter goes, there%26#39;s often snow on the road into the Grove (2 miles one way, gradually uphill),as well as in the grove (1 mile in once you reach the parking lot to the Grizzly Giant). Since you%26#39;re following the road in, you really can%26#39;t get lost. Seeing the giant sequoias in the winter is magical. There%26#39;s hardly anyone there, sounds are absorbed by the snow, and it%26#39;s well....a unique experience.

Happy planning. Wherever you snowshoe, it will be gorgeous since you%26#39;ll be in the mountains and forest. Have a great time!

Here is the link to Yosemite%26#39;s winter activities: yosemitepark.com/Activities_WinterActivities鈥?/a>

Badger Pass offers a combination rental %26amp; lesson for cross country skiing. They also have snowshoeing. I think it%26#39;s easier to learn a new sport if you have professional instruction as you begin.

Your teenagers might want to take a snowboard or ski lesson at Badger. It%26#39;s a great place to learn. And Marmot%26#39;s idea of each of you pursuing your chosen activity is an excellent one; Badger is definitely small enough that you can%26#39;t lose each other!

Here is a map of the Park. nps.gov/yose/鈥OSEpark2003.pdf Tenaya Lodge is in Fish Camp at 5,000 ft elevation, just outside the South Entrance and at the bottom of the map. To get to Badger you%26#39;d drive into the park, down to Wawona at 4,000 feet, then toward the Valley, turning at Chinquapin Station to the east toward Badger Pass at 7,000 feet.

I know that Tenaya Lodge has some outdoor activities, but I%26#39;m not familiar with them.

Enjoy your wonderful winter holiday!

There is an outdoor ice skating rink at Tenaya Lodge in the winter, this area is gorgeous in the wintertime! We have been enjoying the snowfall up in the Huntington Lake area, looks like we just got some more fresh powder up there!

Have fun, the Tenaya Lodge is a great place for families. Tenaya has lots of snowshoes available for guests, be sure to utilize the concierge service there with any questions you may have about the area. :)
