Hello all,
We are planning a visit to Mammoth in February. We%26#39;ll be hiring a car at LAX and driving from there. We%26#39;ll be hiring a 4x4 (SUV).
Are there places on the route from LA to Mammoth where we can buy snow chains if we need to?
Are they easily found in LA?
Are we likely to need snow chains on the route from LA to Mammoth? I don%26#39;t know what the terrain%26#39;s like.
Thanks,

Snow chains (LA to Mammoth)
Unlikely that a 4 wheel drive would need chains. I have one and have never needed chains when driving in the snow during chain controls. If you need them wait till Bishop, buy them at Kmart at the north end of town and keep the receipt. If the chains are not used you can return them.
Snow chains (LA to Mammoth)
You can buy them in Bishop, but as noted above, it%26#39;s unlikely you%26#39;ll need them with a 4WD. Also, rental companies will not allow you to use them on your rental car.
I went to Mammoth the first time last year and you the streets were pretty much well maintained. I also think it is very unlikly that you would need snow chains to get to the resort
going to Mammoth one had best be prepared WITH chains as they CAN be REQUIRED even on 4x4 vehicles
if you don%26#39;t have them when required you can be turned around at chain checkpoints and miss out on gittin to yer destination
bottom line is -- those who are prepared make it -- those who aren%26#39;t often don%26#39;t
