Spring Break Getaway

Heading north from Socal for a spring break getaway this March/April. We are looking for a hotel, $200-$260 price range which is close to Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf, shopping, great restaurants, the total package deal. We are also flying in to Oakland. Can we take the BART? Even willing to stay in a B%26amp;B. Just need some good old fashioned San Francisco advice. Thanks for your help!

Spring Break Getaway

1) You can take BART from Oakland Airport to SF. It entails getting the AirBart shuttle bus from the airport to the Coliseum BART station. This is $3 each way. You may pay in cash or a $3 ticket. Beware, if you use a BART ticket that has more money on it it%26#39;ll take the whole thing and won%26#39;t give you change. Here%26#39;s from the BART website:

www.bart.gov/guide/airport/outbound_oak.aspx

2) Most of us on this board don%26#39;t recommend Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf as a place to stay. There are plenty of hotels (Hilton, Marriot, Hyatt etc) there which are fine places to stay but the area itself gets old pretty fast (touristy t-shirt shops etc). There are lots of hotels in the Union Square area which are right at shopping and eating as well as being close to Chinatown, North Beach and transit options. (Many of these would be walking distance from the Powell St. BART station where you%26#39;d be exiting from the airport.)

Check out the reviews on TA but here are some suggestions: Chancellor, JW Marriott, Rex, Orchard, Inn on Union Square, Petite Auberge, White Swan.

BART is recommended and easy to use from Oakland Airport

I would recommend Inn San Francisco B%26amp;B - not near Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf, but great, unique accomodations in the Mission District

Here%26#39;s my TA review %26amp; there are lots of other positive reviews you can check out also

Have fun...

You will not find your ';total package deal'; at Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf. The shopping is mainly tacky tourist shops, the restaurants are not great. the area is for visiting not staying in.

I would definitely opt for the Union Square area and can recommend this hotel in your price range....

If that doesn%26#39;t work come back and we will give you more choices.

Trust us.

Sorry for the double posting. TA said my firt attemt was an ';error';.

Thanks Puter!! Have you stayed there before. What%26#39;s in the area shopping and food wise. Is it within walking distance of everything. Rates are very reasonable.

The Chancellor is less than half a block away from Union Square. You have easy access to all of the different kinds of public transportation. The cable car runs past your door. BART, if you have occasion to use that, is three or four blocks away, as are the F streetcars which run on Market Street. Muni buses are also easily available.

There are many good restaurants in the area. This is essentially the center of the city.

Shopping includes Macy%26#39;s, right on Union Square, and the WSestfield San Francsico Center, with Bloomingdales and Nordstrom%26#39;s also on Market Street

The Chancellor is an historic boutique hotel whose rooms were all redone last summer in a classy manner. It has excellent management and a wonderful, friendly and knowledgeable staff.

There is a small and cozy restaurant and a ditto friendly bar.

Yes we have stayed there and enjoyed it very much. Read the hotel reviews here. The general manager of the hotel, Wes Tyler, is a regular contributor on this forum.

Don%26#39;t, don%26#39;t stay at Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf.

Thanks so much Puter. You clinched the deal! We booked it and now I can%26#39;t wait. Thanks so much for your help and expertise.

8-)
