Hi guys,
I%26#39;ve been reading the forums and already found some really great tips but I wouldn%26#39;t mind some input on my itinerary. We are flying to San Francisco in April and have 14 days for our road trip before we need to take an internal flight to Texas for my friends wedding (we then fly home from Texas) all I have booked so far is the flights so your input would be great:
San Francisco (2-3 days)
Then 5-6 days driving down the coast ending up in San Diego (I%26#39;m not going to prebook hotels for this section as not sure about LA etc and whether we want to spend time there or not so reckon it%26#39;s best to choose when we get there - will this be OK is it easy to find accomadation?)
I%26#39;m then planning on hopping an internal flight from San Diego probably back to San Fran or San Jose and from there picking up another car and heading to Yosemite.
This section of the trip so far looks a bit like this
Yosemite - 2 nights
1 night near to Kings Canyon (I%26#39;m assuming we need to plan for the Tioga pass being shut in April?)
Vegas - 2-3 nights then fly to Texas.
How does that sound? I know we are covering a lot of ground but we%26#39;ve done similar road trips before in Canada etc. We like a bit of city life but mainly like to explore national parks, the coast etc. I%26#39;m really tempted by the Grand Canyon from Vegas but think they might be trying to fit too much in...!
Our roadtrip plan - some advice please
Instead of flying back to San Jose;just drive to Yosemite from San Diego. Have a look at www.mapquest.com for driving distances and times. San Jose airport is located in a congested area so you don%26#39;t pick up much time by leaving from San Jose after airport checkin%26#39;s, car rentals, and possible traffic jams outside of San Jose.
By the time you check in at San Diego Airport and land in San Jose;you%26#39;ll be half way or further to Yosemite.
Another alternative for Yosemite: turn off the coastal route at San Luis Obispo(#46) to Yosemite.
After Yosemite then continue to Kings Canyon/ San Diego either via Santa Barbara if you want to see this town or on Highway99/ 5 towards Los Angeles.
The Tioga Pass will be closed in April.
Cheers!!
Our roadtrip plan - some advice please
April is Spring Break season in the U.S.
That means it%26#39;s heavy travel time here, especially along the California coast. You really should have your accommodations pre-booked to avoid spending your precious vacation time trying to find lodging.
Here%26#39;s a list of places to consider for overnight stops between SF %26amp; SD:
Monterey/Carmel/Pacific Grove
Big Sur
Cambria/San Simeon
Morro Bay
San Luis Obispo
Pismo Beach
Santa Barbara
Ventura/Oxnard
Santa Monica
Newport Beach
Dana Point
Yes, Tioga Pass will be closed in April, but you can still get to Kings Canyon via 46 south to Highway 180 east.
As for visiting the Grand Canyon, I understand there%26#39;s a company that will fly you there for the day and then back to Vegas. I think it%26#39;s like a 5 hour drive by car, so not a practical day trip.
Thanks very much to both of you. We have now decided to head down the coast but not as far as San Diego (probably stopping in Santa Moniuca) we can then drive to Yosemite from there!
