Car Hire for Aussie Traveller in Anaheim or LA

I am considering to hire a car for 1 week in Anaheim for travelling to attractions such as Universal Studio, Beaches, LA, Hollywood and San Diego.

Most of the car rental companies will charge at about $500 US for economy car including all insurance %26amp; 1 child seat.

Does this seem normal price?

Otherwise, i%26#39;ll consider to buy the coupons from CoachAmerica %26amp; we are entile to 6 trips which would cover most of the attractions %26amp; no need to drive and of similar cost to a car hire.

Please give any tips. Thanks.

That sounds high to me. What car rental companies are you looking at?

Car Hire for Aussie Traveller in Anaheim or LA

Try yescar.com, they are a whole heap cheaper.

We hired a car through www.expedia.com We had a hire vehicle for 3 days. Picked it up at LAX drove down to San Diego then back up to Anaheim a few days later. We were there Sept/Oct last year.

I used Avis, Thrifty, Hertz, Budget and Alamo.

Half of the cost is for all optional insurance which is a must for Oz travellers I think, otherwise it%26#39;s pretty fair %26amp; comparable to in Aust.

Hi there, we%26#39;ve visited many times from Oz. We%26#39;ve always used Hertz. They have a depot on West Katella Ave in Anaheim, just around the corner from the Disneyland main entrance and the strip of hotels in front of the main entrance (which are the closest to Disney as you can literally just cross the road and walk into Disneyland).

The thing to consider about hiring a car, as opposed to doing it by Bus, is the fact that you have freedom to go where you want and when you want, even when you%26#39;re down in San Diego. If you%26#39;re in a hotel and want to go out somewhere for dinner it%26#39;s not easy to do if you have no car!

Try looking at Hertz.com, put in the dates that you want to pick the car up and drop it back. It then let%26#39;s you choose a car and gives you a quote. you can change the car choice if the lowest price is below your budget. One thing to remember is the extra insurance which is a good idea to buy (at the time of rental, if it isn%26#39;t included in the online quote, which it usually isn%26#39;t), it%26#39;s payable at a daily rate. Two types that I think you should buy (if you decide to hire a car) are: 1. Damage Waiver Insurance(about US$30 a day I think) and 2. Liability Insurance (about US$13 per day. So, you need to add this cost onto the quote, if they don%26#39;t include them. They also offer Personal Accident Insurance which you shouldn%26#39;t need if you have travel insurance.

The depot on West Katella is called: Downtown Anaheim HLE, you need to type that in the %26#39;Pick Up Location%26#39; box.

Hiring a car isn%26#39;t a cheap thing but it%26#39;s real nice to have a car when you%26#39;re over there.

Mate, I got mine from Enterprise, via vroomvroomvroom.com and I%26#39;m paying US$900 for 3 and a half weeks rental of a Ford Fusion, the earlier you book, the cheaper it is. I would have saved another US$80 by booking the week previous. I was a bit sceptical about the validity of the booking so rang the Enterprise outlet at LAX directly and they%26#39;ve confirmed that it%26#39;s all good.

I spent days researching the cheapest %26amp; best car hire in Anaheim %26amp; found tripadvisor really good.

There was one fellow who gave me most of the info I needed.

Firstly your better off using the middle of the road companies that aren%26#39;t as expensive but aren%26#39;t dodgy either, most people recommened dollar(owned by thrifty), thrifty, Alamo, budget etc.

We booked a mini van through dollar for 4 days, unlimited km%26#39;s for $194 US ($44p/day), they had a sale about 2 weeks ago on mini vans. Keep checking, there%26#39;s always deals.Book soon though as we were told (tripadvisor) to start looking about 45 days out, as that %26amp; very last min are cheapest. As we needed a van %26amp; they are not always available we booked about 40 days out.

You also don%26#39;t need the extra insurances, as your travel insurance should cover exactly what the car hire companies are offering you, so check with your company. We went with Allianz.

Qantas site is pretty good too as it comes up with all different options for you from different company%26#39;s. We chose dollar through looking at this site but then went direct to the US company %26amp; got it even cheaper.

We%26#39;re the family of 7 that is travelling the same time as you, hope this helps.

..let%26#39;s be careful saying you don%26#39;t need to buy insurance when hiring a car in the USA. Travel insurance does often cover %26#39;Excess%26#39; (ie: if you have an accident, or the car gets damaged, you have to contribute a certain amount of $ to the car hire company..whatever the cause of the damage), however I%26#39;m not sure that travel insurance usually covers actual damage to the vehicle or your liability to others, if the accident is deamed to be your fault. This %26#39;extra%26#39; insurance is usually offered by the car hire company, charged at a daily rate.

If anyone with an Aussie insurance background can help here, it would be vary much appreciated! C3PD.

Hi CP3D,

You are absolutely correct there. I have to talk to both NRMA %26amp; Hertz and the info was given as:

Travel Insurance only cover ';Access'; which is about A$3000 for either NRMA or Allianz. This access only helps if you have damaged property (car or whatever) if less than $3000. A car in the US would be worth as least $30k i guess.

That means to be fully covered (including CDW and Personal Liability) in the US, I would need to pay the optional insurance.

If you do know otherwise, please do tell.

thanks for all the tips.

Sorry ...

Excess not Access :)
