Since you are a family of four, with kids, I really suggest the Columbus Motor Inn. I know you want ';cheap'; but this is the most ';reasonabale'; you will find for your family. They have six family suites, are within walking distance of Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf, which would be important for the kids entertainment.

I, too generally think that with kids, Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf is a good place to locate yourself and the Columbus Motor Inn is probably the least expensive of the possibilities in the area.

Another option are the motor lodges along the western section of Lombard. The Cow Hollow and Coventry (there%26#39;s a 3rd whose name escapes me) are on that stretch and are sister properties to the Columbus Motor Inn. The Cow Hollow has suites, although I believe they%26#39;re rather pricey.

The Hotel de Sol is just off Lombard (and quieter as a result) and has one or two suites. It also has a pool, which kids seem to love regardless of whether.

The area is also great with kids as the neighborhoods which abut Lombard (Marina to the north, Cow Hollow to the south) have lots of shops and restaurants. There are many breakfast options nearby too: IHOP, Mel%26#39;s, Home Plate, Bechelli%26#39;s.

The bay is walking distance as is the Exploratorium ( www.exploratorium.edu ) which you *must* take the kids too and which you%26#39;ll enjoy just as much.

It is a nice walk or 5-10 minute bus ride on the #30 to Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf, continuing on the same line another 5 minutes will take you to North Beach. Stay on longer and you%26#39;ll go right through Chinatown, ending up at Union Square.

Pick up the #28 on Lombard St (west of Laguna) and you%26#39;ll be whisked to the Golden Gate Bridge vista point (with great views along the way). Continue on that line for another 10 minutes and you%26#39;ll be at Golden Gate Park for the Academy of Sciences (not cheap but you could probably stay all day), Japanese Tea Garden, Conservatory of Flowers, Arboreteum, 9th floor observation deck at the deYoung museum, etc.

At Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf you can rent bicycles for a great ride along the bay (mostly flat and mostly off city streets) to the Golden Gate bridge. If the 9 year old can keep going, go across the bridge to Sausalito, have lunch and get the ferry home. This is a *very* popular outing. Along Crissy Field there will be great photo op moments and lots of people who%26#39;ll be happy to snap a pic of all 4 of you. Stop at the Warming Hut just before the bridge for a coffee or cocoa and shop for souvenirs. It%26#39;s run by the Parks so the stuff is nicer than usual.

Have fun!

We have always had good luck at the Columbus Motor Inn. Some of my kids favorites - tripadvisor.com/GoListDetail-i16048-San_Fran…

I bought a neat book called ';Frommers - SF With Kids'; and it has lots of helpful information in it for things to do with kids - including kid-friendly restaurants, etc. I ordered it through Amazon.com

We%26#39;ve been to California a couple of times with our children and had a brilliant time on both occasions. We hired a car but pretty much left it in the hotel garage and got around by the excellent bus and tram services. Union Square has great shops but there is also an excellent shopping mall in SF. The Macy%26#39;s in Union Square has a Cheesecake Factory on top which was a favourite to eat at with our children (there is a car park opposite if you do take the car). Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf is good and we enjoyed the trip to Alcatraz too. We also %26#39;walked across the Golden Gate Bridge%26#39; which is good and even better when you%26#39;ve done it! Have a fantastic time - sure you will.
