simi valley/ malibu

What is the area around Simi Valley amtrak station like? Are there any decent hotels near it. Also any suggestions for drives(w/ rental car)that would take us by mansions as we drive south toward San Diego.

Do you have any particular reason to want to stay in Simi Valley? I%26#39;m honestly not sure what attraction it would have for a tourist - I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;d fine much to do there. Especially when you can take Amtrak to better areas of the city and its only a short bit further. Tbe best ';nice houses'; areas of the LA area are (IMHO) Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Beverly Hills, Bel Air (private), the Hollywood Hills, and Palos Verdes.

The reason I ask about Simi Valley is we want to take a train from San Francisco and eventually end up in Carlsbad. The train gets in late and we thought of spending a night near LA then renting a car and leisurely drivng to our timeshare in Carlsbad.

Simi Valley is a very nice area. It is a few miles from the Reagan Presidential Library. There are decent hotels, all the usual chains. The Amtrak station is just an open platform, no station.

Most mansions have high walls, may be some distance off the road, or in a canyon and cannot be seen. You can take one of the canyon roads from Hwy 101 to the coast - very scenic. I%26#39;m not familiar as to which one is the best.

I would avoid Simi Valley. Its California. Head towards the coast. I know there is a train station in Oxnard. Rent a car from there and drive South down Highway 1. The drive will look familiar because you have seen this stretch of PCH that runs right next to the water in countless movies, commercials and Jay Leno%26#39;s new ads. In 35 minutes you will be in Malibu. Sight see and walk on the beach. Keep driving another half hour and you are in Santa Monica which has hotels to meet any budget and plenty of things to see and do including the famous pier. Highway 1 turns into the 10 in Santa Monica and that will take you on your way to San Diego. I would not stay in Malibu unless you want to spend quite a bit. Let me know if you want a restaurant recommendation.

Simi Valley would be a odd choice to saty when you are looking for touristy sights in the area. It is nice, no question about it, but certainly far away from any points of interest for yourself
