Hi All,

Single Dad taking two daughters (10 %26amp; 12) to LA (Disney %26amp; Universal studios)from Good Friday. My question is regarding our laptop that daughter wants to talk to mum via IM every day.We have a bigpond wireless thingo but I`m not sure how it works when OS,is it like mobiles that you have to sign up for global roaming? or how do you hook up for these Hotspots in hotels etc.

Any help is welcomed.

What? A ';thingo';? Not much information to be able to advise you. Maybe contact the wireless provider and ask their tech staff your question. Chuck...

Sorry mate,What I meant by `thingo` is a mobile wireless card that is provided by Bigpond (my provider)

If you have a wireless card in your laptop, and most do unless it%26#39;s really old, all you need to find is a place that offers free wireless (wifi). Check with your hotel that you%26#39;re staying at, if they do, you should be fine. Do you use your laptop wireless at home?

We%26#39;ve got a Bigpond wireless thingo. The rates to use it roaming in the USA are astronomical; really, really high - don%26#39;t use it.

As CK1234 said hopefully your laptop has a network wireless card and you can find a free wifi hotspot nearby. Quite possibly your hotel will have free wireless. Almost all of the places we stay in the USA have free wireless (except for Disney properties where there was a daily charge if you used it).

Chas62, before you bring your laptop make sure the computer will fit in the room safe. You don%26#39;t want to leave it in the room to be stolen or have to lug it around Disneyland. e-mail your hotel and ask the size of it%26#39;s safes. Not all in-room safes will fit a laptop.

As Noel %26amp; Donna said, most hotels in the US offer free WiFi (although in Las Vegas %26amp; Anaheim we had to pay). The hotel will give you the log on info.

I must admit that we didn%26#39;t lock our laptops up anywhere. When we went out we did make sure they were packed at the bottom of our suitcases though, %26amp; that all cords were hidden.

Thanks to everyone for your advice %26amp; help,it is much appreciated, whilst on a similar thread, has anyone used the TRAVEL SIM for mobiles instead of global roaming with Telstra and if so any thoughts on them,

Cheers,

Chas

Sorry, for the one or two calls we make in the USA we just gulp and swallow the Telstra roaming rates.

Maybe try a Net10 phone from WalMart.

Just hit Astroblasters every day and email a picture back home!

If you are staying at Hojo, they have 2 computers in the lobby for guest to use.

Your bigpond wireless usb (Thingo) will not work in USA.

However most laptops now have wireless built in and you can pickup free wireless from any hot spot.

We stayed at Fairfield Inn and they had free wireless hot spot. You need to open your wireless connection on your laptop and search for wireless servers, some are accessable without a security code and some are not. You just have to try them.

Good luck
