Where to stay and directions from Monterey

We will be traveling from Monterey to Yosemite Easter week. We have reservations at the Lodge at the Falls. We want to leave the evening before and stay somewhere part way to Yosemite so we get an early start the next day. Where would be a good place to stay and what do you think the best route would be to take.

We split up the drive sometimes by staying in Sonora. Best Western there is fine.

We sometimes go to Black Oak Casinos if you need a late night dinner since it stays open later.

There are also some 24 hour restaurants nearby.

It is about a 2 hour drive from there to the entrance gate; 2 and a half or so to Valley Floor.

Sonora is a great recommendation. Perhaps even the Gunhouse Hotel dating back to the gold rush era for something a little different than a chain. We think the Black Oak Casino is a good casino and the food is pretty good too! The town itself fairly lively with lots of restauarnts to choose from too. We like Bannys and Tahlulas. I think you should be able to make the valley within 2 hours from Sonora.

Another choice might be to stay in Mariposa for the night, you are a little over an hour outside the valley.
