What can you tell me about Shelter Island. Is it a quiet retreat type place, or a busy vacation paradise?
Shelter Island
Shelter Island is not really an island. It is a mandmade piece of land attached by a street to San Diego on the north side of San Diego Bay.
It has views of downtown and the bay. There are some marinas there and a few lowrise hotels and a couple of restaurants. It has a grassy strip alongside the water with a path/sidewalk for walking.
One of the hotels, Humphrey%26#39;s, is also an outdoor music venue in summer /fall.
Sooo I don%26#39;t know if it fits either of your categories.
Shelter Island
Can you tell me where%26#39;s the best location to stay?
I%26#39;d like to at least see the water %26amp; still be close to attractions. I have a 5 year old and a 22 year old. Plan on visiting Belmont Park %26amp; would like to be on the bus line rather than renting a car.
We are tentatively booked at Homewood Suites Liberty Station? A full breakfast was included %26amp; has a waterview. But I%26#39;m not sure that is the best option %26amp; are considering Kona Kai on Shelter Island.
Also, can you take a bus from the airport to most hotels in San Diego?
The Homewood Suites is a really nice place, very new and Liberty Station is cool, but water view? That is a stretch I would say, check the map. The water is a channel unless you are on the top floor then maybe you could see the bay.

Kona Kai is also nice, but an older property and has that old school feel. Shelter Island is quiet and somewhat isolated.
You might look at the Catamaran Hotel as an alternative.
Thank you for such a great response. I had to laugh at the water view comment. Their pictures are deceiving!
Thanks again. Have a great weekend!
charmed, YOu will get more help if you start your own thread with your question. The Homewood Suites or the Kona Kai will NOT be good choices if you don%26#39;t have a rental car!
Better choices would be anything downtown, old town, Little Italy, parts of Pacific Beach.
