Places to Stay in San Diego

Can someone recommend a reasonably priced hotel in San Diego that is near the water %26amp; on the bus line? (or is it really best to rent a car?)

It doesn%26#39;t have to be fancy but clean, in a safe neighborhood and with a pool.

Single parent traveling with kids %26amp; their friends. Any travel tips would be greatly appreciated.

What is your idea of ';reasonably prices';? Everyone has different ideas of what that means.

WHAT is it that you%26#39;d like to do while here?

I ask because for some activities a car may be helpful as things are quite spread out.
