Hi we are booking a week-long package through continental airlines, and would love some advice with our hotel! Two affordable choices they are giving us are the Best Western Island Palms on Shelter Island or the Marriott Coronado resort. Another choice that looks interesing is the Best Western Coronado. We are a family of 5 with kids aged, 12 - 5. Which would be the best location for us? We plan to do the zoo, seaworld, Balboa Park, and general touring in the area a couple days to La Jolla, etc. Thanks so much. I am feeling overwhelmed by all the choices!
Best Western Island Palms or Marriott Coronado for family?
We went a couple of years ago and stayed at Loews Coronado. We LOVED it. It is off the beaten path SLIGHTLY. And the beach is actually across the street but we didn%26#39;t do the beach because there was so much else to do. The hotel was just fantastic. We went into the Hotel Del just to compare and the employees were SO MUCH nicer at the Loews. When I go back I will definitely stay there again. And we went to Balboa Park (beautiful) and to La Jolla also. We also did a day trip and drove up to Hollywood and did the walk of fame and tour of the stars homes. We also stopped by Laguna Beach high school. My daughter and her friend (16 at the time) were really into that show then so they had to see it. Have fun!
Best Western Island Palms or Marriott Coronado for family?
All things being equal I%26#39;d take the Marriott in a heartbeat over the others. The resort is newly remodeled and right on the bay. With a car you can easily get around - plus they have a water taxi that runs on the half-hour across the bay to the Marriott Marina which is within walking distance to the Gaslamp, Seaport Village, the Midway, and the Maritime museums.
I%26#39;ve stayed at the Best Western Coronado and was NOT impressed. Small hotel, right on a busy intersection.
I agree completely!! the BW Island Palms is in a pretty location but it is a nice motel type property.
The BW Coronado is on a much busier street and again just a motel.
The Marriott Coronado has more of a resort feel so if price is OK for you and you have a car, I think that will be best of the ones you mentioned.
Marriott Coronado....
Marriott Coronado used to be the Le Meridian which is a 4.5 star hotel chain. Marriott Coronado is a 4.5 star hotel and BW Island Palms/BW coronado are 2.5/3.0 star hotels.
IMO, BW has not kept up with the current hotel trends the last 10-15 years. Hampton Inn is also a 2.5/3.0 star hotel but has kept up with higher standards(i.e. nicer beds/bedding, carpet, furniture, ect.)than BW.
Have a good trip.
